Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC)

One of the most challenging and rapidly increasing needs in our communities is identifying and caring for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), including child-headed families.

Already 44% of the children in Umvoti are orphans.  These children are usually identified by the HCCGs in the community, together with the OVC team.  We visit the children at home to provide counseling, love, and support.   Child-Headed Families and Orphans & Vulnerable Children are supported by the Umvoti Aids Centre in the following ways:

  • Love and affection, material support, and regular home visits

  • School fee exemption arranged and school uniforms provided

  • Guidance with homework and inculcating the culture of learning

  • Assistance with documentation and access to government grants

  • Provision of a monthly food parcel to enhance protection and minimize stigmatization

  • Support with life skills and raising awareness of HIV&Aids

  • Participation in peer group activities to encourage creative abilities

  • Transcendence through cultural and religious practices
