Home based care project

The collective heart of the Umvoti Aids Centre is the 20 Community Care givers who provide palliativecare to the sick in their communities. The Umvoti Aids Centre provides capacity building and skills development for our community caregivers so that they can continue progressing towards gainful employment and generating an income for their families. The Caregivers serves their community through:

  • Ancillary health care and assistance with TB and ARV regimens

  • Encouraging Voluntary Counselling and Testing (HCT)

  • Promoting Reproductive Health Care, PMTCT and VMMC

  • Identification and care of orphans and vulnerable children in accordance with Isibindi model

  • Forming support groups for PLWHAs and linking them to micro-finance initiatives

  • Relief for the poorest of the poor through provision of blankets, clothing, and nutritious meals

  • Referrals to the Umvoti Aids Centre to help attain government documentation and services

  • Hygiene and nutrition education

  • Promotion of Human Rights and Gender Equality

HIV Prevention & Awareness program

The most important battle in the fight against HIV/Aids is the prevention of new infections. Our awareness programme is entrenched in the facilitation of the “Beyond HIV/AIDS Awareness” sessions, provides Voluntary Counselling and Testing (HCT), through door-to-door campaigns, Health talks and dialogues targeting men, women and adolescents. We also run an HIV and Teenage Pregnancy Prevention programme targeting primary school girls. The program is oriented around UNAID’s 90-90-90 Global target, which calls for countries to achieve the Following by 2020.

Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC)

One of the most challenging and rapidly increasing needs in our communities is identifying and caring for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), including child-headed families.  Already 44% of the children in Umvoti are orphans.  These children are usually identified by the HCCGs in the community, together with the OVC team.  We visit the children at home to provide counseling, love, and support.   Child-Headed Families and Orphans & Vulnerable Children are supported by the Umvoti Aids Centre in the following ways:

  • Love and affection, material support, and regular home visits

  • School fee exemption arranged and school uniforms provided

  • Guidance with homework and inculcating the culture of learning

  • Assistance with documentation and access to government grants

  • Provision of a monthly food parcel to enhance protection and minimize stigmatization

  • Support with life skills and raising awareness of HIV&Aids

  • Participation in peer group activities to encourage creative abilities

  • Transcendence through cultural and religious practices

4

Umvoti Day Care Centre (UDCC)

Early childhood and development facility that provides age appropriate training, care and support to children from ages 3-6 for their age and stage development.

5

Masifunde Project

Primary school children receive education in mathematics, basic computing and numeracy as these are an important building in the Early Childhood Development.

The level of education these disadvantaged children receive from the local public school is inadequate and so this program aims to positively affect their learning ability (QI) and school performance, and ultimately individual earning, labour market productivity and can reduce the rate of criminal activity by young adults.

6

Food Security

During the Nelson Mandela 67 minutes’ campaign, the MEC of Agriculture spend this time at our Centre – planting mushroom seeds and vegetables in the garden. The community garden serves as nourishment for the 30 children that we cook for during the week, the produce also forms part of food parcels that we issue to impoverished families in our community and we sell the balance of the produce to the public and keep the proceeds for the maintenance and the upkeep of the garden
